This report explores wildfire prevention strategies by examining current practices in a Swedish context. The aim of the report is to examine and describe Sweden’s governance of wildfire prevention in terms of organization, distribution of responsibility, and how the responsibility is interpreted by stakeholders. The findings indicate that Sweden’s preventative efforts primarily emphasize preparedness, rather than fuel reduction or measures aimed at reducing societal vulnerability. Wildfire prevention in Sweden is largely viewed as a crisis management issue, primarily to be handled by the fire and rescue services. While there is growing awareness of increasing wildfire risks, the respondents perceive the issue as vague in legislation and regulation, and it is mainly perceived as a problem confined to sparsely populated areas. Moreover, preventive measures are rarely the primary means of addressing wildfire risk, and coordination between agencies at all levels is insufficient. The wildfire perspective is largely absent from climate adaptation and spatial planning agendas and is often perceived as conflicting with forest production, which hinders effective prevention. Despite these challenges, the study identifies potential coordination gains and opportunities associated with adopting a more proactive approach to wildfire prevention
